Kayaking offers ULM students an ideal blend of relaxation and adventure. Thanks to the Wesley Foundation, students can paddle for free and explore the scenic Bayou DeSiard.
“We have nine kayaks available, and students can come kayak anytime from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday,” Wesley Foundation director Alan Johnson said. “All they have to do is fill out a waiver online by scanning a QR code on the website, talk to someone in the building and then they can get their kayak, paddle and life jacket.”
For those new to kayaking, Wesley staff guide them around the dock with basic instructions until they feel confident getting on the water on their own. Most students kayak for about 30 minutes from the Wesley dock to U.S. Highway 165, the limit before the bayou runs under the road. Along with a pleasing view of the water, students can also enjoy the sight of wildlife such as turtles, ducks and fish.
Johnson explained that kayaking is most popular among freshmen and during the warmer months, particularly at the beginning of fall and the end of spring. New students are eager to try kayaking with friends, making the dock a lively spot during these times.
Sophomore computer science major Unish Khadka went kayaking at least four times with his friends. He found it to be a good way to relax after a hectic day.
“It was a fun experience for me to try kayaking,” Khadka said. “If you want to try kayaking, I suggest going with a couple of friends just before sunset or during golden hour.”
Kristi Gadwa, director of missions and outreach, said kayaking is also a meaningful way to connect students with the ULM Wesley Foundation. She believes that when students participate in kayaking and engage with Wesley staff, it helps foster a strong sense of community.
“I think students love kayaking here,” Gadwa said. “Providing kayaking to students is one of the ways to give back to ULM and a bridge between students and the Wesley Foundation.”
At ULM, kayaking is more than a recreational activity: it is a refreshing way to slow down, connect with nature and make friends on the bayou. Beyond an outdoor experience, kayaking offers a chance to join a community that values exploration, balance and belonging.
