On Oct. 4, the ULM Warhawks traveled up to Illinois to face the Northwestern Wildcats. The game included long touchdown passes from both teams and a stubborn defense from Northwestern, resulting in a final score of 42-7, Northwestern.
The game started for the Warhawks with a seven-play, 75 touchdown drive that ended with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Aidan Armenta to wide receiver Nic Trujillo.
The Northwestern Wildcats responded with their own touchdown drive that concluded with a three-yard touchdown run from running back Caleb Komolafe.
When the Warhawks got the ball back, they went on a drive that resulted in a 48-yard pass from Hunter Herring to Tyler Griffin. However, even with that pass, the drive did not score any points due to a missed field goal.
In the second quarter, the Warhawks did not score on either of their offensive drives, with one ending on a four-and-out and the other on a punt. The Warhawks’ defense would let up a touchdown and a field goal. The first quarter ended with a score of 7-18, Northwestern leading.
The Warhawks continued their strategy from the second quarter, which resulted in no scores for the rest of the game.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats scored 21 points. The fourth quarter would be more conservative than the last three, with the Wildcats only getting a field goal. The game ended with a final score of 42-7
The Warhawks were led in passing by Armenta with 129 passing yards and 1 touchdown. Braylon McReynolds would lead the running game for the Warhawks with eight carries for 49 yards. In the air, Trujillo led the team with two receptions and a touchdown.
Even with this loss, the Warhawks are still tied for first place in the Sun Belt Western Conference with Troy and Southern Miss. Their next game is on the road at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m.
