Bright colors, laughter and the smell of sweet treats will soon fill Monroe’s newest family hub, Parish Pop & Play. The upcoming play café is designed to bring parents together while giving kids a safe space to explore. Its grand opening on Oct. 18 will feature local partnerships, a variety of “dirty sodas,” and an indoor playground that blends community with comfort.
In an interview, co-owner Megan Hawthorne said that her aspirations for the café are to create a supportive environment for student parents. The café welcomes children of all ages, with a primary focus on those 12 and under.
Q: What is the vision behind Parish Pop & Play?
A: I wanted a place where parents and kids feel comfortable and have a great time. For student parents like me who might need to study while their children play, we’ll have designated workspaces throughout the café.
Q: What inspired you to start this concept?
A: My wife and I tested the idea during a pop-up at one of our other venues, The Hawthorne. It was a huge hit. Parents kept telling us how much they loved having something like this to do with their kids.
Q: In what ways could this place serve as a supportive environment for ULM student parents?
A: It is hard to find parent friends and build a supportive system. Being both a student and a parent is a whole different ball game — you face challenges others might not understand. Here, we want to help parents build that support structure and connect with others going through the same thing.
Q: What measures will be in place for child safety and supervision?
A: Safety was a top priority in our design. There is no access to exterior doors without passing through a gate, so little ones cannot slip out. We have also created enclosed areas for babies and toddlers. Our staff is trained to recognize and handle situations like bullying or rough play to keep the space positive and welcoming.
Q: What entertainment will be available for the children?
A: Beyond the play spaces, we are planning “mommy and me” classes, arts and crafts, music lessons and karaoke nights. We are also partnering with local groups to make Parish Pop & Play an after-hours community hub for families.
Q: What entertainment will be available for adults?
A: Honestly, adults don’t need much entertainment; we just need a chance to sit still. Parents will be able to relax while keeping an eye on their kids, and we’ll have TVs set up for sports.
Q: What options will be on your menu for both children and adults?
A: Along with our signature dirty sodas, we will serve cider, lemonade and baked goods from local partners. Emergency Cravings is developing an exclusive menu for us, and we’re in talks with Drew’s Bakery for their famous gooey cinnamon rolls.
Q: What are your thoughts on offering free Wi-Fi at this establishment?
A: Absolutely. We want this to be a space where student parents can grab a drink, let their kids play and finish assignments in a relaxed setting.
Q: What message would you like to share with student parents at ULM?
A: Do not be afraid to reach out. Our generation grew up online, and it is easy to forget how important face-to-face connection can be. There are so many people here in Monroe who want community, we are here, and we want to make friends.
Hawthorne’s goal is to provide a supportive environment.. From assisting student parents as they balance their studies with their life as a parent, to keeping their children entertained, Hawthorne said that is the mission behind Parish Pop & Play. Hawthorne hopes ULM student parents will take advantage of the resources they provide. Parish Pop & Play seeks to provide a strong sense of community among parents and their children.
