Ace’s Amazing Race was created three years ago from the Department of First Year Experience (FYE).
It was developed as an effort to help students become familiar with the campus, establish community and promote War- hawk pride.
Freshmen are required to participate in Ace’s Amazing Race through their University Seminar class. The race takes place over three days, with 10 groups competing each night. The group with the best time is the winner.
Each group has its Peer Leader participate with them; how- ever, they are not allowed to help with the tasks.
The challenges vary from questions about the Athletic Department to learning the fight song. They also compete in somewhat awkward situations that break them out of their comfort zone.
Freshman Melody Raybourn said, “I thought it was fun. I had to pick up an orange with my chin and pass it to a complete stranger without using my hands.”
Ahmaad Solmone, a Peer Leader, said, “I enjoy watching the students come out of their shells.”
The race brings freshmen together and starts off the year with a strong sense of Warhawk pride.
