ULM turned into an all-night Mardi Gras parade Thursday night as the Student
Government Association held its annual Mardi Gras Ball. The parade-themed event has
become a ULM tradition rooted in Louisiana culture and fun and is now in its 10th year.
Beads flying swiftly through the air, and people feverishly dancing the night away, kept
the party atmosphere full of energy. Students danced the night away celebrating their
freedom for the next couple of days and let go of all their cares.
“It is a very festive time for all the college students to come out and experience the
culture and be glad that we have a few days off,” said Ben Young, Campus Activities
Board president.
After the court was announced, the party had officially begun. Students threw beads,
the lights were dimmed and people flooded the floor to celebrate the upcoming Mardi
Gras break. A “Soul Train” line was formed down the center aisle, showcasing all the
best dance moves that ULM had to offer.
“I’m having an absolute blast at Mardi Gras Ball,” said Ahmaad Solomone, Mardi Gras
Court king, who was having trouble holding his crown in place.
Although the ball has been around for many years, this was the first time many students
had ever attended the event, such as health studies major Karlynsia Mack.
“This is my first time actually coming, and I’m a senior, so yes I am excited,” she said.
