The ULM men’s basketball team held walk-on tryouts at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Wednesday to add to their roster for the 2010-11 season
With six new players and five returnees on the current roster, head coach Keith Richard was hoping to find a diamond in the rough within the 18 participants.
“I really want to pick up a few guys to help us in practice; our numbers are down,” said Richard.
Many types of guys hoped to achieve their goals as a collegiate athlete from over-sized guards to under-sized forwards
After introducing himself and his staff, Richard explained his history with the program and his ties to the team, which he used to play for from 1979 to 1982.
The staff then lined the guys up to begin the tryout with lay-up drills, watching closely as the participants tried to state their case to make the team.
After the drills, the men were broken into two teams of nine, having a regulation five-on-five battle.
The coaches watched from the sidelines for players who could help the team.
One problem was the prior conditioning of some players, However, the men ran back and forth, laying everything on the line for a potential roster spot with the Warhawks.
Clint Broussard, a sophomore who is also on the track & field team, came in to try to become a multi-sport athlete.
Things looked promising for him, as he came in right away, making a wide-open three-pointer and was consistent throughout the session.
The Warhawks will officially begin practice on Oct. 15 and will open up their season in Lubbock, Texas with a road game against Texas Tech on Nov. 12.
The Warhawks will play their first regular season game on Nov. 12 at Texas Tech, and will host their first game in the Coliseum against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Nov. 20.
