Softball team gets big win, solidifies spot in conference tournament
The softball team ensured its ticket to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next month in Boca Raton, Fla., with a home series win against Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“The team has been playing really good in the past three weeks, and they showed it Tuesday by winning two really hard matches,” said head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill.
Holloway-Hill blames the lack of sharpness that girls had the first day.
“They tried to do things they did the first day, but things wouldn’t fall in place, so we made too many little mistakes that FAU got when it needed to get them.”
Pitcher Stephanie Routzon said this series was a great experience for her, and she definitely won’t forget the second game where her team came from behind 3-0, and finally, in the extra inning, scored and won the second game and the series.
“It was amazing,” she said. “Haley [McCall] scored the winning run in the 8th inning, and we all started running and jumping around, throwing our stuff and celebrating the win and the spot at the conference tournament.”
Pitcher Haylie Wilson said the team is physically and mentally ready, and that they will give their best, like they always do.
Left fielder Elena DiMattia agreed with Wilson by adding that for the three years she’s been on the team, the team was never as close as it is now.
She admits that is a big plus this team has.
“We believe in each other,” DiMattia said. “We stick together as a family, and have a great team work, which brings us to success.”
Holloway-Hill added, ”At the tournament, we all start from zero, and only sky is the limit. So, if the team does what I believe they are capable of, I am sure we can do really good.
