Students talk about how much they love intramuarl sports

Several students at ULM participate in intramural sports throughout the academic year, and competitions are just beginning.

Athletic or not, anyone can take part of this electrifying experience.

Intramural are recreational sports for college students to take part in team-affiliated games and challenges.

Robert Reed has been the intramural coordinator at ULM for three years.

“I think all students should consider playing intramurals at some point during their college career,” Reed said.

“Intramurals sports allows you to be competitive while having fun and making friends.”

This semester started out with soccer and flag football.

Now, volleyball is right around the corner.

Since volleyball isn’t played as much here compared to other states, volleyball isn’t the most competitive sport that’s offered.

It’s perfect for those who are interested in relieving some stress and getting some cardio in without extreme competitiveness.

Students can play in three different divisions: Women’s, men’s and co-ed.

However, all sports offered here are fun to try, not just volleyball.

All intramurals sports are “competitive-friendly competition regardless of ability,” said Reed.

Hannah McKee, a freshman at ULM, is participating in multiple intramural sports currently.

McKee said she has yet to meet anyone who has played intramurals and didn’t enjoy it.

In her short time playing intramurals, she’s discovered it’s more laid back than high school sports.

“In high school, all teams focused on was winning. Here, it’s more about having fun doing what you love, and winning makes it better,” McKee said.

Pharmacy student Zach Christian has played a variety of sports while attending ULM.

He’s played volleyball, sand volleyball, flag football and basketball.

Since ULM offers a wide array of sports, Christian is able to play sports that his high school didn’t offer, which is one of the many things he enjoys about playing.

Christian said intramurals differs from high school sports, because there is no added pressure from a coach, and you can have fun.

Sports is a good way to relieve stress, as well.

“I don’t know how I’d survive a semester without intramurals,” Christian said.

Reed and his staff work hard to offer many options for students to choose from.

If you would like to know when upcoming intramural sports are starting, you can go by the activity center and pick up a handout with information.

You can also download the IMLeagues app.

The app will allow you to find out upcoming information on all intramural sports and possibly even find a team to play on.
