Warhawks defense is not producing what they should

The Warhawk football team is falling quickly in the Sun Belt conference standings after a 3-0 start.

Students and fans who support ULM football had faith that the Warhawks would put themselves in a position to win the Sun Belt title.

That goal is merely a dream for ULM now as the team lost three straight conference games.

With Appalachian State leading the conference at 4-0 with Arkansas State and Georgia Sate following in the second and third spot, the Warhawks have dropped down to the fifth spot.

To improve the defense, the Warhawks should switch up their scheme.

A 4-2-5 look is having a nickel package on the fields at all times which causes confusion.

This package has its pros and cons.

The pros on this scheme is that the defense will thrive against a passing offense.

Passing lanes should be hard to find for opposing quarterbacks, but the Warhawks have struggled in coverage this year.

They gave up a school-record 266 receiving yards to Costal Carolina receiver Malcolm Williams.

On a lighter note, the Warhawks are ranked fifth in the Sun Belt in pass defense.

The con of having a 4-2-5 defense is that you’re asking your defensive backs to come up and make sure tackles in the run game.

The team has struggled this year with tackling, and it shows with this defensive scheme.

ULM is last in the conference in rush defense.

To ensure a better performance from the ULM defense, the team should change their scheme.

A 4-3 defense would do diligence for the Warhawks.

This will help with coverage and stopping the run.

The key is that they will be in a two-deep zone or cover two look.

This will make the Warhawks defense more stable and functional.

It will also take the load off of the smaller defensive backs being asked to play in the box.

The offense can’t carry the load all game.

In their first three games in the Sun Belt, the offense put up eye-opening numbers.

Now, the offense looks stagnant and uncomfortable.

The team chemistry is slowly fading away, and the real problem with this team is not being overshadowed by the offense anymore.

The truth is that the ULM defense is struggling a lot this year.

Could we see a change in the defense in 2018?

This could help the Warhawks consistently compete and win in the Sun Belt conference.

This change could be a game changer for ULM if the team decides to change its defensive scheme.
