MONROE CONVENTION CENTER – After an attendance record was set at Malone Stadium in 2007, the ULM Warhawks will face off against the Grambling State Tigers twice in 2011 and 2013, both times here in Monroe.
In 2007, the two teams, although 40 miles apart, met for the first time, spurring a major event in the community: a record crowd of 30,101 came out to see the two schools play each other. “You look at those sales tax dollars, and you just have to say wow,” said Monroe City Mayor Jamie Mayo at the press conference.
ULM also became part of Grambling’s athletics history as the first Division 1-A school (now Football Championship Subdivision) to play the Tigers. “The team turnout was magnificent, we saved money, and it was a large crowd,” Grambling coach Rod Broadway said of the game in 2007. “Student-athletes for both teams will be excited for the matchups.”
With the announcement, ULM’s home slate has been filled for 2011, with the school hosting GSU and four Sun Belt games. The Warhawks will travel to Florida State on September 3, and Iowa on September 24.
However, with Grambling playing in Malone Stadium in 2013, and Baylor traveling to Monroe the same year, compiled with four Sun Belt games (as of the current conference), the possibility of having six home games in 2013 is very well alive.
