Back on Oct. 15, 2017, the University of Louisiana Monroe soccer team beat Arkansas State, 1-0.
The Warhawks have not won a game outright since then. But Sept. 1, 2019, ULM beat the University of Southern Mississippi, 1-0.
One more game would be played by the Warhawks during the week of the first against Northwestern State. ULM would create a new streak by beating the Lady Demons, 1-0.
“It feels good to win,” head coach Keyton Wheelock said.
The Warhawks first win in nearly two years and the first win of this season was due in large part to the play of junior goalkeeper Angel Hailey.
In a game where ULM was outshot 18-7, Hailey would be invaluable and would finish the game with a clean sheet including a staggering 11 saves.
“Hats off to Angel. She made some great saves,” Wheelock said.
The only goal of the day was scored by freshman Khyjian Thomas.
Besides just being the first win in over 90 weeks, the win against the Golden Eagles marked the first win for the Warhawks in their new field at Brown Stadium.
The Warhawks would not have to wait long to win their second game in Brown Stadium as just five days later ULM won again.
After Hailey’s dominant game, Wheelock and the Warhawks would go a different direction and put in transfer goalkeeper Rian Kasner. Kanser would follow Hailey’s clean sheet with a clean sheet of her own.
Just like against the Golden Eagles, Northwestern State came out firing in the first half and got off five shots in the first half. But Kanser and the defense of the Warhawks would keep the Lady Demons off the board.
On the game, the Warhawks would be outshot just like against Southern Miss but again it would not matter as one of ULM’s three shots would find the back of the net as 19 minutes into the second half, freshman Melissa Taft would score the only goal of the game.
“Lissa’s strikes were fantastic,” Wheelock said. “She had great turn and placement.”
The backline and the goalkeeper would keep the Lady Demons at bay throughout the game, and lead the Warhawks’ 1-0 win.
“Sometimes, you prepare and come out and things just don’t seem to be working,” Wheelock said. “But when you play with heart and grit and find a way, you show your true character.”
The Warhawks will look to continue their winning streak on Friday, Sept. 13 in Conway, Arkansas against Central Arkansas.
