Strong roster key to success for Williams

For the last three seasons,

women’s basketball coach Brooks

Donald Williams has experienced

little success. However, with the

returning starters coming back

to the court and the team back to

full strength, she says she believes

that year four will be a breakout

year for the Warhawks.

Last season was a struggle for the

Warhawks. They started out 4-11

in non-conference play, which

included a 1-4 record against instate

opponents. Conference play

was even worse with ULM going

winless with an 0-14 record.

The roster going into the season

looks to be a strong and experienced

unit.

“We have some healthy players

and some depth,” Williams said.

“Those are two huge factors to

bring into non-conference play.”

Some key players to look forward

to in the 2022-23 season include

seniors Dimond Brooks and Kierra

Brimzy.

“Those two players are players

that have put points up on the

board at this level,” Williams said.

“They are very capable of impacting

us greatly.”

Another player to keep an eye on

this season is Emma Merriweather,

who transferred from Kansas

and played at Texas Tech in the

Big 12.

“We’re excited to have Emma’s

length and versatility,” Williams

said. “We have not had a player

like Emma here that I’ve been

fortunate to coach.”

ULM defeated Millsaps College

83-47 in a Tuesday night exhibition

match. The match provided

many takeaways for Williams.

“I thought the exhibition gave

us a couple things to look at,”

Williams said. “We were able to

form chemistry with some of the

players and have players play

under the lights with a jersey on

for the first time.”

Williams highlighted some

interesting matchups during

the non-conference schedule

including a home game versus

Louisiana Tech. The schedule also

features in-state games against

Louisiana Christian, Northwestern

State and McNeese State.

Williams also commented on

the new additions to the Sun Belt

Conference.

“The new additions to the conference

are all good teams,” Williams

said. “It will be interesting

how we match up against them.”

The regular season starts with a

home matchup versus Louisiana

Christian on Monday, Nov. 7.
