Sororities, fraternities come together for Unity Show

Bayou Park Circle came alive with Greek love and unity Wednesday as a part of the festivities for Greek Week. All week, Greek Life hosted events centered around competition between two teams.

Team one included Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Kappa Delta sorority, Kappa Beta Gamma sorority and Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.

Team two contained Phi Mu sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, Kappa Sigma fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

Some contests included a banner designing contest on Monday and a taco cook-off on Tuesday. But the main event was the Greek Unity Show on Wednesday, in which each team choreographed and presented a step routine.

Sororities and fraternities worked together to present their best moves in hopes of wowing the judges and taking home the prize money.

During the Greek Unity Show, five judges made up of faculty, staff and students scored the teams and decided a winner to receive a check for $700.

Team one succeeded in winning not only the People’s Choice Award but also the Judges’ Choice Award.

Despite the division, the two teams spent the week working on a common goal: unity.

Adrienne Drago, the coordinator of Greek Life, defined unity as “working together and not against each other and promoting and supporting chapters across different councils than your own.”

Drago also added that the week as a whole aimed to shed light on all Greek Life organizations on campus, providing them an opportunity to achieve things as one.

One of the members of AKA, Jalissa Parker, said she enjoyed being able to work on the Unity Show with Greeks both familiar and unfamiliar.

“We’re pretty close with other NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) organizations already,” Parker said. “So it’s nice to work with IFC (Inter-Fraternity Council) and CPC (College Panhellenic Council) organizations for once and get to know them a little better and bond with them.”

Greek Week made everyone in Greek Life consider the concept of Greek unity. Kappa Sigma member Garret Darden said the week allowed him and his brothers to focus on what Greek unity means to them.

“It really makes you think a little bit and broadens your horizons and the way you look at stuff,” Darden said. “You see the way other organizations think and the way they work. It also opens up a different diversity and culture you aren’t used to seeing.”

After the show, Alpha Phi Alpha member Taj’zaquan McWilliams spoke on his experience with Greek Week.

“Our reason is bigger than ourselves,” McWilliams said. “It came up really fast, and with all of us having pretty busy schedules, we had to make time for each other, but everything worked out.”
