Students boogied to their own beat last Thursday night in the Hangar. In a seemingly quiet room, attendees each had their own choice of song blasting in their earphones for only them to hear.
Upon arrival, students received headphones and connected to one of two channels. The channels played different genres of music, ranging from country to R&B.
While some students two-stepped back and forth in a line dance, others swayed to a soft R&B mix. The light-up headphones glowed either green or red to indicate to others which station guests were tuned in to. Students could choose to listen to the same songs as their friends or move to their own beat.
Freshman pre-nursing major Cylicia Jackson enjoyed spending the night with her friends and tuning into different songs.
“I loved just being in the moment and having fun with everyone,” Jackson said.
Songs varied from country remixes to throwback pop. The two DJs transitioned between slower and faster songs, mixing together genres and decades.
Often, the DJs tuned into student’s headsets to hype up the party with a “what’s up ULM” or some kind of callout.
An beloved Spring Fever event, CAB hosts Silent Disco each year.
CAB secretary Thalama Malla loved seeing other students having as much fun as her.
“I enjoyed the wonderful music, 70s disco vibes and quality time spent with my friends,” Malla said. “I think people really liked the fact that everyone could be themselves and dance their hearts out. With finals approaching, I think this was a much-needed stress buster for us.”
CAB Member Bryce Lovelady agreed that the dance offered a great way to get away from schoolwork for the night.
“The highlight of Silent Disco was definitely just being able to dance and take a break from everything going on,” Lovelady said. “I believe students enjoyed being able to be themselves and enjoy a fun time with friends while also meeting new people.”
The night concluded with a few line dances, and students went home to rest up for the remainder of Spring Fever. The retro-themed day wrapped up with everyone dancing through the night and truly getting in that groovy spirit.
