Coming from a hard-fought match against James Madison, the Warhawks wanted a second-straight home win on Oct. 12.
Fans packed the house for the Homecoming game, with ULM reporting 22,645 attendees. The crowd made history as the largest Warhawk football crowd in five seasons. Despite the large crowd, the players did not let the crowd interfere with their gameplay.
Kicking off the game, the Golden Eagles drew first blood with a field goal with three minutes left in the first quarter. The Warhawks responded with a touchdown. Following the touchdown, the defense forced a fumble recovered by ULM. The ULM offense capitalized on this opportunity, adding another touchdown to the board.
Southern Miss sent the game into halftime with a field goal to cut the lead to 14-6.
In the third quarter, Southern Miss blocked a field goal and returned it for Golden Eagle’s first touchdown of the game. After a two-point conversion, ULM’s narrowed to 17-14. The Warhawks remained unfazed, scoring three consecutive touchdowns to kill the Golden Eagles’ comeback. The Warhawk’s strong offense sealed the game with a 38-21 victory.
While the ULM offense converted 50% of third downs, the defense stopped 12 of 13 third down conversions for Southern Miss.
ULM quarterback Aidan Armenta finished the game strong, passing 188 yards. He completed 10 out of 17 passes and rushed for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Ahmad Hardy led the team in rushing with 121 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive Lineman Kevontay Wells was a force of nature with six total tackles, four solo, 0.5 sacks and 2.5 TFLs
“I think our offense is starting to take shape,” ULM head coach Bryant Vincent said. “I like the way we’re headed, and I like the mentality of this team.”
The Warhawks have improved after a 2-10 season last year. Notably, they haven’t started 5-1 since their national championship run in 1987. With their only loss coming to the top-ranked team in the country, they are now just one win away from bowl eligibility.
Following a bye week, the Warhawks will travel to South Alabama, hoping to secure a second road victory.
