On Feb. 24, the ULM baseball team (4-3) faced Little Rock Trojans (4-3), but came up short with a 5-3 loss.
The game started quickly in the first inning with a series of outs, followed by scoreless second and third innings.
The top of the fourth was a turning point, but not in the Warhawks’ favor. The Trojans got the first score with two on base, leading by three runs at the end. The Trojans secured another home run in the fifth, extending their lead. The Warhawks followed with two strikeouts and still no runs.
The Warhawks picked up momentum during the sixth. Senior Colby Lunsford started the inning with a single, and senior fielder Isaiah Walker followed with a double. Junior fielder Jake Haggard secured an RBI double, sending Walker and Lunsford home. Junior outfielder Bryce Blaser produced an RBI single which allowed Haggard to get the third run, cutting the gap to 4-3 in favor of Little Rock. As the seventh inning ended, the Trojans brought in another run.
In the eighth inning, Walker advanced to first after a pitch hit him. While Haggard was at bat, Walker attempted to steal second base. The catcher reacted quickly and threw him out. This was the first scoreless inning for both teams since the third.
The bottom of the ninth looked promising for the Warhawks with a single by junior outfielder Henry Garcia Jr., a hit-by-pitch on graduate catcher Tony Lindwedel and a walk by senior utility Jack Clark. With the bases loaded, redshirt senior first baseman Michelle Artzberger struck out, putting an end to the game. The final score was 5-3 in favor of Little Rock.
Walker went 1-for-2 and scored a run. Haggard followed with a 2-for-4 performance, including a triple and two RBIs. Blaser added an RBI single, finishing 1-for-4. Artzberger led the defense with 11 putouts while Lindwedel contributed eight.
The Warhawks will face Alcorn State on March 11 at 6 p.m., their final game before Sun Belt begins.
