A dominant pitching performance and a relentless offensive attack propelled ULM (13-16) to an 8-4 victory over Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Tuesday night at Lou St. Amant Field. The Warhawks extended their winning streak over the Lumberjacks to three, improving their record against SFA to 15-10.
Freshman pitcher Brennan Eager started off strong, finishing his first inning with two strikeouts and tossing all his innings without allowing an earned run. Offensively, junior infielder/outfielder Jake Haggard opened the scoring with a 407-foot home run on the first pitch he received, his third home run of the season.
Meanwhile, senior infielder/outfielder Isaiah Walker started off his inning with a triple in the third, helping ULM add two more runs. A four-run fifth inning, highlighted by key hits from redshirt junior outfielder Henry Garcia Jr., redshirt junior infielder Kade Dupont and freshman catcher Zach White, put the Warhawks firmly in control. Despite SFA cutting the lead in half in the seventh inning, the Warhawks held steady to secure the win.
The Warhawks have struggled with consistency this season, especially in the Sun Belt Conference. They have faced challenges in pulling off wins. However, their offensive surge against SFA and depth in the bench are positive signs for building momentum in conference play.
As this game was a non-conference game, multiple non-starters were able to get valuable minutes. Six players recorded multi-hit games, and Eager’s efficient outing (53 pitches, three strikeouts, no walks) showcased their depth and potential to step up all around on the roster.
Looking ahead, ULM faces a tough test in a three-game Sun Belt series against App State starting April 3. The Warhawks will need to maintain their offensive production and improve on defense to find success. Following the series, they will take on Northwestern State on April 8 in another non-conference matchup, providing an opportunity to build momentum before returning to league play.
