Be polite in the laundry room

One of the main difficulties with transitioning to dorm life is getting used to sharing the laundry room with neighbors.

Though most laundry gets done without much conflict, aside from the occasional bleaching or shrinking of one’s own clothes, sometimes conflict arises amongst neighbors.

“Sometimes people leave their clothes in there for multiple hours after they’ve been finished and it’s kind of annoying so I’ve just taken them out and set them on the table next to it,” said Laurie Kinsley, a sophomore accounting major from Pineville.

Laundry room etiquette is a set of rules that make doing laundry a little easier for students.

Rule number one of laundry room etiquette is to avoid using more than one washer or dryer unless there are plenty of empty washers or dryers available for others to use.

If there are only three machines available in the whole room, use only one so others can get their laundry done.

The second rule is to keep track of the time your laundry is in the machines. Try to be as prompt as possible so machines will remain available for others to use.

However, people should wait at least 10 minutes after the laundry is done before considering moving it, especially if removing clothes from a dryer.

“I get mad when people put my clothes in those plastic bags. If you don’t get your laundry as soon as it’s done then they put your clothes in plastic bags for you to get later” said Alex Young, a sophomore Spanish major from Grand Cane.

Finally, make a point to clean off the lint screen after finishing your laundry and pick up any loose paper or trash left in the dryer.

Some other things to be mindful of when doing laundry: report any lost items or any stealing witnessed, don’t overload the machines or use too much bleach as this wears down the machines. Try hand-washing greasy or extremely smelly clothing before using the public machines and most importantly, don’t stare at other peoples’ underwear while they’re folding clothes (that’s just creepy).

If conflict over laundry still arises with neighbors, try doing laundry on a different day or at an earlier time.
