The great Sun Belt rivalry between ULM and ULL didn’t fail to impress as the Warhawks won the Battle of Louisiana by defeating ULL 56-50 in double overtime. This marks their first win over the Cajuns since 2013’s game.

At the end of regulation, the score was tied 43-43 after a furious comeback from the Cajuns.

In ULM’s first possession in overtime, sophomore quarterback Caleb Evans threw a 15-yard touchdown to sophomore receiver RJ Turner.

ULL retaliated with a six yard-run to even the score at 50. Junior corner JJ Dallas made the play of the game with a clutch pass breakup on fourth down near the sideline to get the ball back into the hands of the Warhawk offense.

Along came senior running back Derrick Gore who muscled his way to a game winning eight-yard touchdown run to stun the Cajun fans.

Earlier in the game the Warhawks came out the gates firing on all cylinders, scoring 23 points in the first half.

The offensive display put on by Evans was impressive. He ran for five touchdowns and passed for one to match his jersey number (6).

The Ragin’-Cajuns kept it close as they continued to abuse the run defense of the Warhawks, gashing them for huge gains.

The run game proved to be the only offensive game plan that worked for the Cajuns early in the first half.

The second half proved why the Sun Belt is often called the “Fun Belt” as the Warhawks scored back to back touchdowns to break the game open.

ULL wouldn’t go down easily as their defense began to contain Evans for a couple of drives.

The Cajuns managed to score three consecutive times to even the score at 43 as time expired.

The one key stat of the game was the two missed PAT’S by ULL that cost them two points.

If the Cajuns had connected on the two PAT’s, they would have been up 45-43, thus winning the game.

The field goal kicking game was an Achilles heel for the Cajuns.

After a 3rd down stop by the Warhawks in the second overtime, ULL kicker Stevie Artigue missed a field goal to put the Warhawks in prime position to win.

During the game, it seemed the Warhawks would choke under pressure and allow the Cajuns to steal one in their own backyard.

The Warhawks’ grit and fight solidified an entertaining win again their bitter rivals in arguably one of the best games in Sun Belt history.

The Warhawks look to go on a two-game winning streak as they return home to face Coastal Carolina next week.

Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
