From inspiring lectures to fierce competition, ULM’s 2025 College of Business and Social Sciences Symposium brought students together to showcase their skills and uncover their “superpowers.”
Scheduled Oct. 27-30, the symposium embraced the theme “Superpowers: Discover Yours, Transform the World.” This engaging event featured a distinguished keynote address by Jim Davidson, an elevator pitch competition, career fairs, a cookout, the annual CBSS Brain Bowl and a variety of insightful speaker sessions.
On Monday, CBSS collaborated with the Office of Career Development to host a career readiness workshop in Strauss 148. This workshop allowed students to enhance their resumes, improve their internship and job interview skills, refine their formal attire and learn effective job-hunting strategies using platforms like Handshake and LinkedIn.
Assistant Director of Student Employment at the Office of Career Development Linda Ngo said their goal was to prepare and empower every student to succeed in their professional journey.
“I hope this event helps students feel more confident in taking their next career steps, whether that’s applying for internships, interviewing, or networking with employers,” Ngo said. “I also hope it helps them realize that the Office of Career Development is here to support them through services like resume reviews, mock interviews and career coaching”.
The Rush Hour Career Fair held on the first floor of Hemphill Hall was another key highlight, drawing employers from renowned companies eager to connect with ULM talent. Students seized this opportunity to showcase their professionalism and confidence, forming valuable connections that will undoubtedly propel their careers forward.
“By practicing networking, articulating their strengths, and receiving feedback from industry professionals, students leave the event better prepared to pursue opportunities, advocate for themselves, and step into their careers with a sense of purpose and self-assurance,” Susie Cox, an associate dean professor at CBSS, said.
These events helped students unleash their superpowers, giving them confidence that, with the skills they possess, they can create change in their fields and communities.
Overall, the symposium not only showcased students’ abilities but also strengthened ULM’s sense of community — inspiring every participant to embrace their superpowers and take confident steps toward their professional goals.
