The ULM chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a premedical honor society, hosted a community volunteer fair at Hanna Hall to help students fulfill volunteer hour requirements for their future careers.
Alpha Epsilon Delta, a premedical honor society, actively guides and assists students in their future medical careers. Alpha Epsilon Delta President Emily Horton shared that as a biology pre-med major, she finds it challenging to find volunteer opportunities.
“For a lot of pre-health degrees, we are encouraged to have volunteer hours,” Horton said. “That can be very hard and intimidating for most students, especially in a city you are not familiar with.”
The fair featured both medical and general organizations from Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana, such as Hospice, Med Camps of Louisiana and River Cities Cats. Horton explained that the event’s goal was to centralize opportunities from these organizations and connect students with them.
“We wanted to give all students a chance to meet various volunteer services across the Monroe area,” she said. “Most of the current seniors had a difficult time reaching out to groups, so we wanted to bring them to campus.”
Caleb Seney, Executive Director of Med Camps of Louisiana, appreciated the society’s initiative.
“It is a great way to get students introduced to the potential patients they will be serving in their profession,” Seney said.
While events like the fair are valuable, sophomore biology major Marchal Maseir noted that professors are also a key resource
“The easiest way to find volunteer opportunities as a student is coming to events like this or reaching out to your professor,” Maseir said. “Professors know so many people, and they can give you many opportunities, not just with volunteering but also networking in general.”
By connecting students directly with local organizations, the fair provides essential networking resources and hands-on experience, benefiting students across all fields of study.
