The Warhawks traveled to Texas to face their conference opponent, the Texas State Bobcats, on Feb. 14. This game was close, with each team trading the lead throughout the game. Both teams also had players scoring more than 25 points, with a final score of 84-95.
The first half started with a quick lay-up and a jumper in the paint from the Bobcats, but it would not take long for the Warhawks to respond with a lay-up of their own and a 3-point shot to put them up. This lead would not last long with the Bobcats taking it back in the next possession. For the rest of the first half, the Bobcats would keep a lead of at least two points on the Warhawks.
In the second half, the first ten minutes would be close, with the lead changing hands. It was only in the last ten minutes that the Bobcats would pull away from the Warhawks with 3 pointers to get a comfortable lead. In the second half of play, the Bobcats dominated in second-chance points, bench points, and points off turnovers when compared to ULM. Texas State outscored ULM 6-13 in second-chance points, outscored them in bench points with 0-13, and outscored them in points off turnovers by 8-14.
In the first half, the Warhawks shot 16-29 from the field, averaging 55.17% from the field. The team also shot 6-9 from behind the 3-point line, which averages out to be a 3-point percentage of 66.67. They attempted 6 free throws, hitting 5. In the second half, the team shot at a field goal percentage of 55.56 and had a 3-point percentage of 44.44.
Lavell Brodnex led the team in points with 31. Ayomide Bamisile led the team in rebounds with 5, and Krystian Lewis led in assists with 4.
Some of the reasons why the season has been a disappointment so far are the injuries. With their transfer portal forward/center being out for the season, their front court is lacking. Another angle you can look at the situation is that this is Coach Cunningham’s first year, so the players have to learn his coaching style.
The Warhawks’ next game will be against conference opponent Troy, which will be played at home on Feb. 18, starting at 6:30 p.m.
