To enhance local infrastructure, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) began repairing streets and constructing new structures across Monroe. On its mapping website 511la.org, the DOTD projected its restoration efforts to continue until late 2026.
These efforts extended to North 18th Street, where crews addressed the poor condition of the asphalt. As part of the project, DOTD contractors re-stripped the roadway from four lanes up to five, adding a two-way center left-turn lane and reducing the width of the remaining lanes. The goal of the project was to improve both traffic flow and safety in the corridor.
In the center of the street, two closed lanes restricted drivers to a section of North 18th Street in front of Louisiana National Bank and HD Graphic Print Shop, 1001 Louisiana 840-6. This restriction halted traffic to a steady crawl, leaving roads heavily crowded.
On Mar. 4, work on the road ceased. However, drivers still saw cones and broken concrete surrounding the shoulder of North 18th onto Forsythe. Still, the traffice slowly returned to its original pace.
While the progress to a smoother, safer drive is closer, there is still much work to be done. To ensure safety for both the driver and contractors, caution is recommended for those returning to taking North 18th Street and surrounding routes.
