In 1995, ULM reached out in hopes of extending its international presence within the academic community, which lead to the establishment of ULM’s international house. Today, the university continues to expand its presence with a partnership between ULM and the Puerto Rican government.
In Nov. 2025, ULM president Carrie Castille and her administration traveled to the Caribbean. During this trip, Castille and her administration attended a meeting with Puerto Rico governor Jenniffer González-Colón and the University of Puerto Rico’s president.
The visit covered many areas where ULM can partner with Atlantic University and the University of Puerto Rico. Given Puerto Rico’s history of natural disasters, ULM discussed launching a hurricane relief program that Puerto Rico can provide insight on. Puerto Rico will also teach ULM about how to approach agriculture in a tropical climate, making agriculture a significant aspect of the collaboration. Lastly, the collaboration between the universities will hopefully open doors for connecting Puerto Rico’s pharmaceutical industry with ULM’s College of Pharmacy.
“From the fields of disaster relief, agriculture, pharmacy and beyond, I look forward to working with our new friends in Puerto Rico to develop a partnership that will be mutually beneficial for us all,” Castille said.
Though nothing is secured yet, discussions are being held between the universities and will likely lead to an update in the coming months. While students await this update, they can check out the trip to Puerto Rico. This cultural immersion experience will take place in Summer 2026 from June 2 to 11.
