Warhawks dominate LA Tech but fail to perform against Alcorn State

The Warhawks came ready to play in their first game Friday in the Warhawk Classic against the Lady Techsters. The game started off tight with the first inning scoreless. ULM’s defense stopped LA Tech’s offense in the top of the second with three up, three down.

Molly Mackey led off for the Warhawks in the second inning by advancing to first on a walk. Rochelle Roberts advanced to first on an error. ULM now had two runners on base with Mackenzie Miller up to bat. Miller cleared the bases with a line drive to left field and scored on an over throw to home.  The second inning ended with ULM up 3-0.

The ULM defense stood their ground against LA Tech finishing the top of the third with a quick three outs.

Alexis Cacioppo and Hollie Letourneau got the bats moving for the ULM in the bottom of the third. Both players had hard hits to the left side, giving ULM two runners on base. With two outs, Vanessa Garcia, stepped up to the plate and hit a 3 run homerun. The third inning ended 6-0 ULM.

ULM’s defense held the Lady Techsters to zero in the top of the fifth. On offense, the Warhawks loaded the bases with no outs. Miller, once again, had a hard hit to the left side scoring Mackey, advancing Garcia to third and forcing Roberts out at second. With Garcia and Miller on base, Miyuki Navarrete stepped to the plate and hit a single, scoring Garcia ending the game 8-0 ULM.

Amber Griffin, a kinesiology major, said, “I think we play well as a team, and it gives us an advantage.”

The Warhawks finished the night with Alcorn State. Unlike the first game, ULM struggled to settle in. ULM fought to score the first run in the second.

Alcorn State did not back down in the top of third.  Instead, they answered with two homeruns scoring a total of three runs in the third.

On defense, Alcorn held ULM to no runs keeping the score at 3-1.

In the fifth, Alcorn scored a run making the score 4-1. Alcorn State kept the score at 4-1 until the seventh when Mackey started a rally with ULM offense.

The Warhawks attempted a late rally but came up short.  The game ended 4-3 Alcorn State.
